Hundreds of thousands of years ago, there was no American Southwest. All of the twisted, rugged, tortured shapes that have risen up were once suppressed under an all-encompassing sea covering the earth from Colorado to Coronado. Thunderous forces of wind and water at work for millennia have carved an almost magical landscape of red rocks punctuated with lakes and rushing water. The best of these have been preserved in America’s massive western National Parks, where majestic sandstone formations, towering mountains and streaming waterfalls stand proudly near crevices that plunge more than a mile into the earth.
At 277 miles long and 6,000 feet deep, the Grand Canyon is the granddaddy of dramatic landscapes. You’ll thrill to the view that made the Canyon one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Bryce Canyon, by contrast, is not a canyon at all, but a series of horseshoe shaped amphitheaters carved in the plateau. No less dramatic, its series of hoodoos, spires, slot canyons, fins, columns and high rock walls are packed densely into 52 square miles. The rock formations at Zion Canyon jut majestically out of the desert earth, “where the grandeur of natural forms unites with brilliancy of color.” At Mesa Verde, massive red-rock hillsides became the shelter of an expansive dugout area for cliff dwellings built of adobe bricks that appear to have been individual home units of the ancients. At Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, you’ll marvel at more dramatic natural architecture, traveling among the largest concentration of stone arches on the planet. The scenic drive in Capitol Reef National Park follows a hundred mile long “water pocket fold” where the teutonic places crashed together, uplifting a huge section of earth.
The rusty red landscapes of the Southwest continue to unfold as you reach Monument Valley, not a valley at all, but a wide, flat desolate landscape with mesas and buttes jutting hundreds of feet into the air. Canyon de Chelley, a combination of several different southwest landforms, ultimately gives way to the isolated mesas and buttes surrounding Sedona. Enjoy the heights and depths of these wonderful natural formations to the fullest.
